About the Instructor:
Known for her elegant design and expertise in capturing the essence of dramatic, natural lighting, internationally acclaimed photographer, Kathleen Norris Cook's images have been consistently published in Europe, Japan, and the US. Along with national advertising work, her credits include participation in various Sierra Club publications, Eastman Kodak calendars and books, and such magazines as Popular Photography, Outdoor Photographer, View Camera, American Photo, and National Geographic.
 
She has completed four books; the most recent, Spirit of the San Juans, a large format book showcasing her vision of the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado; Yosemite, Valley of Thunder; Exploring Mountain Highways; and The Million Dollar Highway, a book dealing with the area between Ouray and Durango, CO. She has also produced a 45 minute documentary film based on the book of the same name, Spirit of the San Juans.
 
Although her success warrants extensive traveling, her home base is Ouray, CO and the majestic San Juan Mountains.

At Weehawken Creative Arts, our "GO" Date is the date when, if the minimum number of students has registered, we know the class will be held.  If the minimum number of students has not registered by the "GO" Date, the class will be canceled.

Course Description
About the Class: 
Digital or Film Shooters Welcome!
 
Capture breathtaking autumn colors in the spectacular San Juan Mountains. . .  
 
You will be working in various lighting and weather conditions from early morning to late afternoon.
 
Day1: Fri Sept 25, 2009, 7-9 PM at Venue Roscoe Fox in Ouray (539 Main Street, Ouray). Friday evening you will meet your classmates and be able to show a small portfolio (6 images) of your work. Kathleen will also present a brief slide show of her work. This will be an opportunity to discuss techniques and set the schedule for the first morning in the field.
 
Day 2: Sat Sept 26, 2009, Sunrise to Sunset on site. On Saturday, Kathleen and the class will be in the field with a midday break for lunch and personal time. You may choose to join her for the whole day or part of the day. Expect a long, intense day. For those who will be shooting film, we will develop film on Saturday evening for review on Sunday afternoon after the sunrise shooting session.
 
 
Day 3: Sun Sept 27, 2009, Sunrise to 10 AM on site. 10 AM to 3 PM, followed by a critique/edit at the Ouray School 5:15 PM- Wine and Cheese, location TBA. After the review on Sunday the class will be invited to a complimentary showing of the "Spirit of the San Juans". This will complete the workshop.

Notes
DIGITAL CAMERA USERS:
Digital Cameras are preferred in this class. If you are using a digital camera, it is essential that you bring your laptop with you for downloading and editing your work.
 
NOTES....
If you wish to shoot film, then you should bring your own E-6 transparency film. Students are responsible for all film and processing costs; if you are shooting film, special arrangements will have to be made for processing on Saturday evening. Please let us know at registration if you will be shooting film.
 
Tripods are essential for all participants

SUPPLY LIST:

Samples of personal work (no more than 6 pieces per student), Tripod, Camera with all lenses, E-6 Film if not shooting digital (8 rolls), Good rugged shoes or hiking boots, Layered clothing for all kinds of weather -- come prepared for cool mornings and evenings with a chance of working in the snow and/or rain showers, Camera Bag is essential, Polarizing filter or filters, Graduated neutral density filter (can be ordered from B&H Photo in NYC or Calumet in LA -- ph:  323-466-1238)  2-3 stops are good for average use.  If possible, bring a soft line hard line version of the filters.        Bring a lunch (or order a boxed lunch through WCA) and a beverage on Saturday and Sunday.  On Friday, dine at the restaurant.
