Notes

Supply List, Suggestions and Instructions: All WCA students receive a 15% discount on art supplies at The Painting Marmot, on Main St., in Ouray, CO.

Students are encouraged to try both a still life and a portrait if they so choose!

Brushes: #4, 6, 8, 10 Rounds, a #24 round is great for backgrounds

Paper: Arches 140# or 300# cold pressed

Palette: Choose a palette with large mixing areas and colors that pertain to your painting.

Other: two plastic water containers, drawing pencil and sharpener, kneaded eraser, Magic Rub eraser, and plenty of extra paper for practice, a handful of Q-tips, facial tissues, bath towel and masking tape with low tack.

Optional: hair dryer and extension cord

Janie's suggested Palette: I prefer transparent and semi-transparent paints. My palette is Daniel Smith but I do not expect everyone to have that. Just have a good assortment of clean colors that you are familiar with but make sure they are professional grade. Also they should be transparent or semi-transparent. Test your colors to know what you have. I am always testing new colors so this list can change just a little but basically this is what I have on my palette now. Indanthrone Blue, Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Turquoise, Undersea Green, Sap Green, Quinacridone Gold, New Gamboge, Transparent Pyrrol Orange, Hansa Yellow Med., Perylene Scarlet, Quinacridone Rose, Perylene Red, Quinacridone Red, Transparent Brown Oxide, Permanent Brown, Quinacridone Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Quinacridone Burnt Orange, and Carbazole Violet. I will try to keep this list updated as I change colors. You will find a group of colors that you like best and to save money you can buy tubes and share with a friend to see if they work for you.

Janie's Instructions: Come with your paper stretched and ready to go. Use your own photos to work from and have your subject drawn lightly onto your paper. If there are areas you are uncertain of, leave them and we will work on that. Enlarge your photos to 8x10 if you have trouble seeing the detail or you can use 5x7. Make sure you bring all the photos you think you might need for what you are painting. Also make several black and white photocopies of your photos, 8x10 in size off a copy machine, for values of the picture, as this can be useful for design consideration and for reworking the composition.

Cindy's suggested Portrait Palette:
Winsor & Newton: Brown Ochre, Yellow Ochre, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Red, Rose Madder Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Ivory Black

American Journey: (Found at www.cheapjoes.com) Coffee with Cream, Apricot (flesh), Peachy Keen

DaVinci: Cadmium Red Light (this brand is needed to mix the correct skintones)

Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache: Permanent White

Cindy's Instructions: Prior to class: using a 3-H pencil, lightly sketch or trace your portrait onto Arches paper, cut to a size approximately 11x14. Keep it simple ~ head and shoulders. To clearly see the details, the head should measure approx. 6 to 7 inches from the top of the head to the chin. Attach your portrait to a sturdy board with masking tape. Bring two copies of your reference photos, one in color and one in black and white.
