Now in its eighth year, Michael McCullough’s Annual Amateur Sculpting Contest attracts amateur sculptors as young as 14 from across the Western Slope of Colorado to sculpt five pounds of clay into a masterpiece in just two hours; a panel of professional artists determines the winners and awards hefty cash prizes. In honor of Michael McCullough, John Billings, together with Sculpture House and Weehawken Creative Arts will present The 8th Annual Ridgway Amateur Sculpting Contest Sunday, September 12th. Artist Check-in will run from 12:30 until 1 pm at the Sherbino Theater at 604 Clinton St. The contest will run from 1 pm until 3 pm for adults at 610 Arts Collective (next door to Sherbino at 610 Clinton St.) and 1 pm until 2:30 pm for youth at the Sherbino. The public is welcome to silently observe during the 2 hour creation period. Refreshments and treats will be served outside during the entire event and people will be encouraged to play with multiple clay materials at “play stations”. There will be a one-hour break for judging, followed by an awards ceremony reception, starting at 4:00 pm.
