Wire Sculpture with Gary Chaffin

Wire Sculpture with Gary Chaffin

Wire Sculpture with Gary Chaffin

Join wire sculpting artist Gary Chaffin for a multi day experience in the world of wire art!

This class runs 3 days and will incorporate 5 different projects, classes will run 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday with 30 minute lunch break, and Thursday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

There will be an introduction to the tools and materials used in the class including safety considerations. In all sessions I will circulate and assist students as needed. If student is having difficulty, I will create wire outline for student to work on.Each student will leave with a finished piece.

The instructor provides all materials and tools and protective eyewear. Open to ages 8 to adult.

About Gary: While attending college I discovered my ability to sketch with wire. I first drew curves in wire to make earrings for friends. Soon they got too big for ears! Then I created larger shapes . . . elephants, trains and a mobile above my daughter's crib. I was captivated by how the wire worked with negative space and kept experimenting, developing and refining my techniques. Each of my 3D designs are spontaneous impressions. I begin with a loosely visualized image. As I develop the idea in wire the finished representation takes on its own personality. There are no patterns, jigs or drawings beforehand. Each complex sculpture is created totally freehand, sometimes from a continuous wire. My only tools are pliers and cutters. The wire hardens at the bends without using any heat. I demonstrate, interact and brainstorm with the public in juried art shows in my kid friendly booth. My unconventional art in wire appeals to all ages. Inspiration comes when they ask "Can you make ??? The excitement of people, when encouraged to collaborate with an artist to create a custom order or to watch how I "fool around with wire", adds diversity and entertainment to any festival. Tying in wire bending workshops for children or adults around an event hopefully will stimulate creativity and exploration in the arts and perhaps other facets of life. Even though my artworks have consumed over 100 miles of wire and sometimes I think I've done it all, I still get new ideas that just beg to be tried.

  • Session 2. Project 2. The portrait, Making people and faces, self portraits?

Telling Stories Through Songs with Sarah McQuaid

Telling Stories Through Songs with Sarah McQuaid

Telling Stories Through Songs with Sarah McQuaid

What is it in a story – whether it be a fairytale, a historical event or a recent news item – that makes it worthy of a song?

A strong image? A phrase that resonates? An added layer of metaphorical meaning? Is there a message we’re trying to deliver? What are the elements (chronological, geographical, thematic) of the story and how will they determine the structure of the song we write? Does the story have a climax? A repetitive theme? A dramatic twist? Who tells the story? How do we turn a straightforward narrative into poetic lyrics that the listener will remember and want to hear again and again?

Sarah McQuaid has presented guitar, songwriting and music business workshops at music schools, festivals, arts centres, private homes and other venues in the UK, Ireland, the USA, Netherlands and Germany. She has also given presentations and workshops at primary and secondary schools in the UK, Ireland and USA. Below are descriptions of some of her most popular workshops and school presentations, followed by comments from attendees and letters of recommendation from school staff.

Alchemy of Mixed Media with Lauren Mantećon

Alchemy of Mixed Media with Lauren Mantećon

Alchemy of Mixed Media with Lauren Mantećon

The combination of mixing, additive and reductive as well as the chemistry of all can sometimes be daunting.

I have been a painter for over twenty years. Within that time I have incorporated a variety of materials into my art practice. Some years one technique might dominate another- but I do seem to work best when I have more than one material or texture in dialogue with another on the surfaces I choose to use.

Together in a relaxed environment we will work from the ground up with many options to play and explore with. Dry, wet, mark making- hand made gesso, joint compound, mediums, acrylic paint, oil sticks, cold wax. There is not a formula or a linear procession, but there are a few tricks and guidelines along the way to quickly enhance the development of your authentic. Discussions on the philosophical and personal relationship to your working process will all be part of the workshop interplay. Risk taking is encouraged.

Some experience suggested.

A material list will be provided. Canvas or odds and ends you may have considered using in art but never sure just how. Bring uncompleted works as well. Informal discussions and critiques will concentrate on the practical and outrageous, challenging all our pre-conceived methods of working, thus expanding the technical and aesthetic considerations that inform an art practice.

Lauren Mantecon- MFA has been a practicing visual artist and educator for over twenty years Currently living in Santa Fe, she is a former professor of art from the University of Portland, Oregon and teaches workshops on the creative process throughout the country. She is currently represented by Friesen Gallery, Ketchum, ID, Muse Gallery, Columbus, OH and Hilton Head, SC and Imogen Gallery in Astoria, OR.

Registration is $225 and does not include materials. Supply lists will be supplied to all enrolled prior to class start.
