This is a weekend workshop- 2 full days (10AM-4PM) with a working lunch. Students must have a working understanding of watercolor. If the student is a beginner, she should take the Getting Loose watercolor workshop before registering for this course. Poured watercolor techniques will be taught, along with art concepts and watercolor techniques that will make the artwork successful. These include value studies, handling edges, mixing pigments, and understanding basic color theory.


Materials: students should bring to class the following materials:-two water containers- one for mixing pours and one for washing tools-6 small dixie cups-several sponges- at least 3; also bring clean rags.-watercolor brushes for mixing, testing, and finishing work. At minimum bring one small round brush and a 1″ flat brush.-painting palette with watercolor pigments, see list below.-The following watercolor pigments in tubes will be used in this course: (9 tubes of watercolor pigments; if your tubes are mostly squeezed out, bring new tubes for this class. Poured watercolor uses a lot of pigment.)-Blue: cobalt; thalo (or Windsor); ultramarine.-Red: permanent rose; a warm red like Windsor or cadmium; burnt sienna-Yellow: cool yellow- (choose one-hansa medium, lemon yellow, or aureolin); warm yellow- (choose one-gamboge or hansa deep); earth yellow-raw sienna- high quality #140 watercolor paper/cold press- Arches or Windsor Newton recommended. Cut to 1/4 sheet (11” x 15”) and mount with staples on a watercolor board. Cover staples to the edge of the board with wide masking tape.-Soft lead drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, and sketchbook for value studies; also useful/not required- mechanical pencil.-large tub/ size roughly 18”x14”x4” deep to make pours-fresh bottle of liquid mask- do not bring an old bottle, as the mask/frisket will be dried out or will not lift after the painting is complete. You will need the following application tools that you do not paint with: separate jar to rinse brushes, a tiny and a large brush to apply mask, a bar of soap in an old lid, clean rags. Mask pens are very useful, but not required.- hairdryer with a no heat setting is very useful- not required
